Victorian Hair Styles

Make-up was not a big thing in Victorian era, but Victorian women spent all their time doing the hair. The hot irons were invented and was in heavily used in Victorian period so women's hair during this era of romance and feminine mystery was often severely damaged from the relentless use of hot irons. As this happened, hair became scorched and often had an unpleasant odour that had to be masked with heavy perfumes.

Victorian period's hairstyles were all about the big volume heavy up-do hair, to archived this, hair was never cut except in cases of serious illness. As volume hair was so important in that period, it is like a woman’s crowning glory, so Victorian women storage their fallen hair too. After brushing the hair, they would remove the hair from the brush and place it through the opening of the receiver for storage. Once enough hair had accumulated, it could be used to construct rats. Rat was an item that can be putting underneath the hair to give even more volume looking hair!

Come the 1840s, women wore coiled chignons on the back of the head. Hats were a very traditional element in the overall look. Customary decoration included ribbons and plumes. Also, long drop curls were very common particularly among female children.

Here are some images of Victorian women's hairstyles.
